Research Overview

The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) has more than 270 independent investigators, 700 postdoctoral fellows, and 225 Ph.D. students on its campuses in La Jolla, California, and Jupiter, Florida. A hallmark of TSRI is its interdisciplinary approach to scientific discovery, enabled by cross-cutting technologies. The institute’s focus, broadly defined, is the quantitative molecular sciences and their connection to human health. TSRI is well positioned along the axis of translational science, the aim of which is to relate advances in the basic sciences to opportunities in drug discovery and disease-related research.

The scientific portfolio of the institute has three tiers: a foundation of activity in the basic molecular sciences; a middle layer of technology-driven discovery research involving either small molecule or macromolecular approaches; and a top layer of research that focuses on specific human diseases. TSRI is especially strong in the areas of immunology and infectious disease, biochemistry, structural biology, chemical biology, and organic chemistry. According to an analysis by Thompson Reuters Essential Science Indicators, the institute ranks first in the United States in citation impact in the chemical sciences during the past decade.

According to U.S. News & World Report, its graduate school, the Kellogg School of Science and Technology, ranks sixth in chemistry and seventh in biological sciences in the nation. The cutting edge of discovery is thrilling to the best scientists, and such individuals gravitate to The Scripps Research Institute, which counts among its faculty three Nobel Laureates and 17 members of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.


The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) is a nonprofit research institution whose philosophy emphasizes the creation of basic knowledge in the biosciences for its application in medicine, the pursuit of fundamental scientific advances through interdisciplinary programs and collaborations, and the education and training of researchers preparing to meet the scientific challenges of the future.


The Scripps Research Institute has two campuses: its headquarters in La Jolla, CA, and a new facility in Jupiter, FL.

La Jolla, CA

The La Jolla campus provides more than 1 million square feet of space on 35 acres of land (14.7 of which are owned by the institute) next to the Pacific Ocean. Located in close proximity to the University of California, San Diego, the campus is situated with easy access to San Diego’s scientific community, which includes the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, as well as a concentration of some 300 biotechnology companies. Jupiter, FL

The Jupiter, FL, campus consists of a 325,000-square-foot facility consisting of three buildings completed in early 2009. Adjacent to Florida Atlantic University and the future home of a branch of the Max Planck Institute, the new Scripps Florida campus is at the center of an emerging cluster of biotechnology and pharmaceutical firms. The more than 200 principal investigators at TSRI include many distinguished leaders in their fields, including three Nobel laureates and numerous members of the National Academy of Sciences (including its Institute of Medicine), American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and American Association for the Advancement of Science.

While academic divisions are de-emphasized across the institute to encourage collaboration, each faculty member belongs to one or more of the following departments:

Educational Programs

In addition to the training of hundreds of postdoctoral fellows (see Postdoctoral Services), TSRI offers a distinguished graduate program in the biological and chemical sciences as well as outreach programs for high school and middle school students, teachers, and undergraduates.

Launched in 1989, the Kellogg School of Science and Technology is ranked among the top graduate schools in the country according to a number of metrics, including U.S. News & World Report. The publication now places the Kellogg School seventh overall in chemistry, with a ranking of third in the specialty of organic chemistry and fourth in the specialty of biochemistry. The school is also rated seventh overall in the biological sciences, with a ranking of ninth in the specialty of biochemistry/biophysics/structural biology. Grants and contracts provide funding for a significant portion of the institute’s research activities. This revenue is derived primarily from the National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies. In addition, grantors include, among others, the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and the Juvenile Diabetes Association.

Gifts from individuals and private foundations provide an important source of funding for TSRI. Private foundations that have provided support include the ALSAM Foundation, Lucille P. Markey Charitable Trust, W.M. Keck Foundation, Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, Pew Charitable Trusts, the Ellison Medical Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Harold L. The establishment of the Scripps Florida campus was made possible by a one-time $310 million appropriation of federal economic development funds and by the Florida State Legislature and by an economic package provided by Palm Beach County.
